Ooh, I like a challenge - I'm sure you've read Earthsea, but Ms. LeGuin always deserves a mention. If you want to go Canadian, check out Kenneth Oppel and Tanya Huff. Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle isn't exactly for kids, but fantasizes the 18th century; likewise, Dan Simmons's Ilium combines the Trojan War, The Tempest, and tons of literary in-jokes.

That's all I can offer for fantasy; I'm really more of an sf fan . . .

Yeah, I've read Earthsea, but it's definitely good reccomending. I'll look into the other books you're reccomending.

I used to be mor einto SF, but I've swung back to fantasy after my early high school years.
